Tree Data
The trees are reported to attain a height of up to 100 to 140 feet (30 to 42 m), with trunk diameter of 36 to 60 inches (90 to 150 cm) above buttresses.

Stems are often irregular, and are clear of branches to about 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 m).

Sapwood Color
The distinctly demarcated sapwood is whitish to pinkish-white in color.

Heartwood Color
The heartwood is described as yellowish brown to reddish brown, and darkens upon exposure. Species from East Africa are reported to be lighter in color.

Grain
The grain is typically highly interlocked, but is occasionally slightly interlocked.

Texture
The texture is typically coarse.

Odor
There is no distinct odor or taste.

Natural Durability
Durability is rated as very high, and the material is reported to be resistant to attack by marine borers. Resistance to Impregnation The heartwood is reported to be resistant to preservative treatment.

Toxic Constituents
Sawdust from machining operations has been associated with nose and throat irritation in some individuals, and the seed and bark of the tree are reported to be poisonous if ingested.

Strength Properties
The species is considerably stronger than White oak or Teak. It has exceptionally high bending strength qualities when air-dried. Maximum crushing strength, or compression parallel to grain, is exceptionally high. The species has very high density.

Comments
Known as Sasswood in Nigeria, the bark of this tree is reported to yield a poisonous extract that was used locally in trials by ordeal.
