Tree Data
The tree is reported to grow to heights of 80 to 120 feet (24 to 37 m), with trunk diameters of 24 to 48 inches (60 to 120 cm). Boles are well formed and straight, and are clear from branches for up to 40 feet (12 m).

Sapwood Color
The narrow sapwood is whitish or yellowish gray in color, and is well demarcated from the heartwood.

Heartwood Color
The color of the heartwood is reported to be variable. It is generally a rich crimson hue, ranging through shades of red to brown, often with darker red or black streaks. The color may also be pale red or yellow and matures to dark reddish-brown.

Grain
The grain is usually interlocked and irregular, producing a ribbon figure.

Texture
The texture is described as rather coarse.

Luster
Natural luster is rated as high.

Odor
Freshly-cut wood is reported to be faintly aromatic. There is no characteristic taste.

Movement in Service
The timber is reported to have very good dimensinal stability, and retains its shape better than Teak (Tectona grandis ) after seasoning.

Natural Durability
The heartwood is reported to be very durable and is fairly resistant to attack by termites and other insects. Very durable woods may last for more than 25 years in contact with the ground and without any preservative treatment. The sapwood is usually attacked by pinhole borers.

Resistance to Impregnation
The sapwood is rated as permeable and the heartwood is reported to be fairly resistant to preservative treatment. The wood is naturally duarable, and protection through preservative treatment is reported to be less critical.

Strength Properties
Andaman padauk is very strong, and is equal to Teak in most strength properties. It has high bending strength in the air-dry condition (about 12 percent moisture content). It has superior properties in compression parallel to grain in the air-dry condition than Teak, White oak, or Hard maple. It is moderately hard and resistant to wearing and marring. Weight is very high, and density is high.
