Tree Data The tree is reported to be large, maturing to heights of 180 to 200 feet (55 to 60 m), with trunk diameters of up to 8 to 10 feet (2.5 to 3 m), but averaging about 36 to 48 inches (90 to 120 cm).
Buttresses tend to be short, and are seldom more than 3 feet (1.0 m) high. Boles are typically well-formed, and are clear to about 80 feet (25 m).
Sapwood Color The sapwood is described as pinkish or reddish when freshly cut, but it loses this color and becomes grayish brown with lighter and darker stripes. It is often distinctly differentiated from the heartwood, and is 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) wide.
Heartwood Color Heartwood is initially yellow to golden brown in color, usually with a slight greenish cast. The color matures upon exposure to reddish-brown.
Grain Grain is reported to be very irregular and closely interlocked, producing an attractive stripe or roey figure on quartered surfaces.
Texture The wood has a moderate texture, and is reported to have a waxy appearance and feel.
Luster The timber is reported to be lustrous.
Odor Freshly-cut wood is reported to have an unpleasant smell. Seasoned wood has no discernible odor or taste.
Natural Durability The heartwood is reported to have high natural resistance to attack by decay fungi and termites. Sapwood is not durable and is reported to be readily attacked by powder-post beetle. The wood is reported to resist attack by marine-borers.
Weathering Properties The timber is reported to have excellent weathering qualities, and has high resistance to wear. Although the wood is considered to be highly suitable for flooring, it is reported to be very difficult to machine. Resistance to Impregnation The heartwood is reported to be unresponsive to preservative treatment, and the sapwood is difficult to treat.
Substitutes The timber is reported to be very hard and heavy, and has been suggested as a potential substitute for Lignum-vitae.
Comments Strength properties are reported to be mid-way between those of European beech (Fagus ) and Greenheart (Ocotea ).
