Tree Data
The tree is described as deciduous and is medium to large in size. On favorable growing sites, the tree is reported to attain a height of up to 100 feet (30 m), with a well-formed stem that is clear to about 30 feet (9 m).

Trunk diameter is reported to be 32 to 48 inches (80 to 120 cm). In drier localities, the tree is reported to be much smaller and often develops crooked and fluted stems. Trees growing in the forests in Burma are reported to generally larger in size.

Sapwood Color
The sapwood is narrow, and is described as yellow-brown to pale pink, or pale reddish white in color.

Heartwood Color
The heartwood is reddish brown, or dull-red brown to dark brown, with darker streaks, and darkens upon exposure.

Grain
The grain is usually interlocked or wavy.

Texture
The wood is described as very hard, heavy to very heavy, with a texture that is moderately fine or medium, and even.

Luster
Wood surfaces are described as rather dull.

Odor
There is no distinct odor or taste.

Movement in Service
The timber is reported to have moderate dimensional stability after seasoning.

Natural Durability
The heartwood is reported to have high natural resistance to decay because of resinous substances in the wood. Its resistance to termite attack is reported to be comparable to that of Teak (Tectona grandis ). Resistance to Impregnation The heartwood is rated as extremely resistant to preservative treatment. The sapwood is moderately resistant.

Deposits
Wood vessels may contain whitish deposits.

Strength Properties
The species has very high bending strength, and is much stronger than Teak in the air-dry condition (about 12 percent moisture content). Maximum crushing strength, or compression parallel to grain, is exceptionally high. It is hard and superior to Teak and probably Mahogany. The wood is very heavy. The density of the wood is very high.

Comments
The woods of Irul (X. xylocarpa ) and Pyinkado (X. dolabriformis ) are reported to be very similar in structural and other properties, and are very difficult to distinguish.
